This unassuming native woodland wildflower has some rather unique qualities. One, it blooms as early as April, making it an extremely valuable pollen source for our native bees. Two, it is poisonous. It should not be ingested and can cause contact dermatitis if handled. Three, its single flower gives way to a golden lemon-like fruit in the summer. The ripe fruit is edible and not toxic, but, it seems a risky pursuit. Mayapple grows up to 18 inches tall with, usually, two umbrella-like leaves, and one white flower that looks a bit like an apple flower. It can spread and form a groundcover. part-shade to full-shade. It becomes dormant in summer months, making it more suitable for woodlands or "wild" gardens where the gap won't be an issue.
